BARCELONA ARE STUDYING WAYS TO RE-SIGN LIONEL MESSI IN 2023 - REPORT SAYS

Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona last year came as a huge shock to the footballing community. There were very few who would have imagined that the Argentine would not end his career at Spotify Camp Nou. But the club’s wage bill situation and La Liga’s strict Financial Fair Play rules meant that Barça were unable to renew Messi’s expired contract and he eventually ended up signing for Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract.

However, now that his contract with the Parisians will expire in less than a year, a return to Barcelona is being mooted heavily for Messi. President Joan Laporta has admitted that the Argentine superstar’s chapter at the club is not over while manager Xavi is also said to be open to his return. So much so that, Mundo Deportivo is now reporting that Barça are studying the best possible ways to mend their relationship with Messi so that they can re-sign him in the summer of 2023

BARCELONA BEGIN NEGOTIATIONS TO SIGN PSG FORWARD FOR NEXT SUMMER

Barcelona have begun negotiations to bring PSG star Lionel Messi back to the club next summer. Messi left Barcelona in a surprise move to PSG, after spending his whole career at the Spanish club. The Argentinian is widely regarded as one of, if not, the best player to have ever graced a football pitch, and it’s no coincidence to see Barcelona decline since he left the club.

Now, according to journalist Miguel Blazquez in the tweet below, Barcelona have already begun negotiations with Messi’s team over a potential transfer next summer, when his PSG contract expires. Whether Messi would be interested in a return to Barcelona remains to be seen, especially with the club in financial difficulty and being some way behind Real Madrid last season. In his first season at PSG, Messi helped the French club win the league title, and will be hoping to contribute next season, helping them win their first ever Champions League.

MESSI LEADS STATS DESPITE AVERAGE SEASON

The world of football was stunned when the great Lionel Messi left Spanish La Liga side Barcelona to sign for French club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) last summer. Messi left Barcelona after the Catalan giants were unable to accommodate his salary on their wage bill due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in La Liga. PSG gave Lionel Messi a two-year deal with the option for a third year when he signed for them as a free agent at the start of the just concluded season.

For his debut season at PSG, Messi didn't perform as expected considering the heights reached during his time at Barcelona. He had spent around 15 years in the first team at Barcelona. Despite his average season, the petite Argentine was still able to record 25 goal contributions. Messi scored 11 goals and provided 14 assists for PSG in his first season at the club. Six of his goals came in the French top flight, while the other five goals were scored in the Champions League.

BARCELONA PRESIDENT RULES OUT POSSIBLE MESSI RETURN

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club have already completed two signings ahead of the summer transfer window but said they are not considering bringing Lionel Messi back to the club. Laporta did not name the two signings, but ESPN previously reported Barca have agreed deals with Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie ahead of their contracts expiring with their respective clubs in June.

Laporta mentioned that the club have sealed two signings already, adding that he can't give out any names yet but disclosed that one of the two players is a central defender and the other is a midfielder.

Lionel Messi is struggling to adapt to French football and is still finding it hard to score goals in the French Ligue 1 for Paris Saint-Germain so far this season, leading to speculations that he may not be a good fit for the club.
