Diego Simeone has suggested that his team will be able to close the gap

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has suggested that his team will be able to close the gap on rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid once the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo retire.

Both players are regarded as the best in the world by a considerable margin. It is not surprising that they have shared the world Player of the Year award in succession for the last few years. After having done the unthinkable by beating both these teams to the la Liga title last season, Simeone has failed to retain the league title this season.

Barcelona managed to reclaim the crown after a 1-0 success over Simeone’s team at the Vicente Calderon. After the match, Simeone admitted that the bar has been set really high by these two clubs, who have been immensely helped by the way television money is distributed in Spain.

John Terry has praised winger Eden Hazard

Chelsea captain John Terry has praised winger Eden Hazard after the Belgian provider yet another inspirational performance to help the club win.

The blues took on Stoke City at Stamford Bridge looking to put an end to the poor home form they have been showing in the last few months. Even though Chelsea remain the only unbeaten home team in all of English football, they have managed only two wins in the last five matches. Another set of dropped points would have been a huge setback for the club in the efforts to win the league title.

Lionel Messi misses Penalty against MC

In an astonishing turn of events, Lionel Messi grabbed the headlines for the wrong reason after missing a penalty against Manchester City in the Champions League. The Barcelona superstar would have given his team a 3-1 advantage in the first leg.

This would have been more than enough to confirm Barcelona’s passage into the quarter-finals of the competition. As it is, the match finished as a 2-1 victory for the Catalan club and City can still believe that they have a way back. Manchester City have never progressed past the last 16 stage of the Champions League.

Manuel Pellegrini is a man under pressure to deliver the European cup to the club. Last season, he witnessed his team falter to the same opponents at the same stage. There is a danger of history repeating itself, but Pellegrini believes that the penalty miss by Lionel Messi gives City hope of getting back into the tie.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to starting line-up

Sweden recently welcomed their star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to the starting line-up, but it was not enough to get a win against Montenegro in the Euro 2016 qualifying match. Sweden came into the match with a really tough three points in order to stay in touch with table leaders Austria.

These latest dropped points have resulted in Austria opening a four-point advantage, although Sweden still remain in the automatic qualification spot. They could have put a significant gap between them and the likes of Russia and Montenegro. As it is, the team will be hoping for a return to form when they take on France in a friendly.

Ibrahimovic is regarded as the greatest Swedish players ever. He is the national team’s record goalscorer, but the Paris St Germain forward has been struggling with injuries this campaign.

Barcelona troubled after Messi was rested

On December 13, Barcelona locked horns with Getafe on a Spanish League match and Lionel Messi along with his teammates were uninspiring as they had to settle with a goal-less draw allowing their rivals, Real Madrid on having a bigger advantage at the top of La Liga.

After going through such a mediocre performance when playing against Getafe, Luis Enrique and his squad returned to winning ways after blasting 5 goals past Cordoba and Lionel Messi reached yet another milestone as he scored his 50th goal of 2014.

Pedro opened up the scoreboard at the 2nd minute of the match as he scored the only goal of the first half and his teammates added more goals with Luis Suarez scoring his first goal with Barcelona at the 53rd minute and some moments later Gerard Pique along with Lionel Messi netted the last goals of the match in what was a very convincing and overwhelming victory for Barcelona which was needed after having made such an underwhelming performance against Getafe.
